The museum opened in 1982 after renovating and expanding the former Yokohama Specie Bank building, originally constructed in 1935.With the core theme of “international cultural exchange and the interaction and transformation between Eastern and Western cultures,” the museum houses approximately 80,000 items. These include the National Treasure “Dotaku and Doka Excavated from Sakuragaoka,” as well as archaeological and historical materials, Nanban and Komo (Western-influenced) art, old maps, and glass-related artifacts. The permanent exhibition “History of Kobe” presents the city’s history through four chronological sections. The “Collection Exhibition” features rotating displays based on different themes, and a variety of special exhibitions are also held throughout the year.
