A temple associated with Akechi Mitsuhide, overlooking Lake Biwa at the foot of Mount Hiei
This ancient temple, said to have been founded by Prince Shotoku in 618, was revitalized as a Tendai Buddhist Pure Land practice hall and is now the head temple of the Tendai Shinsei sect, with over 400 temples across Japan that emphasize precepts and Nembutsu.
Though it was burned down during Oda Nobunaga's attack on Mount Hiei, it was restored by Akechi Mitsuhide. The temple is known as the burial site of Akechi Mitsuhide, with several items associated with him still preserved. The main hall (important cultural property) was donated by the Tokugawa family of Kishu, and the guest hall (important cultural property) is a building relocated from the former Fushimi Castle. Additionally, the grounds offer many attractions, including a garden designed by Kobori Enshu and sliding door paintings by Kano Eitoku.
